Pawsitively Welcome: A Guide to Enjoying OYB Patios with Your Pup

The sun is shining, the patio is calling, and adventure is in the air! Here at Old Yale, we know that for many of you, the best adventures include your four-legged best friend. Sharing a beautiful day outdoors with good company, good beer, and a happy dog by your side? That sounds pretty perfect to us.

That's why we're happy to welcome well-behaved canine companions to join their humans on our designated outdoor patio areas at both our Chilliwack and Abbotsford locations! We love seeing wagging tails enjoying the fresh air just as much as their owners enjoy a fresh pint.

However, to ensure a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for everyone – pups, owners, other guests, and our staff – we have a few simple guidelines and tips for bringing your dog along for your Old Yale visit. Think of it as our "Patio Pup Etiquette"!

Our Patio Paw-licies: Keeping Things Tail-Waggingly Smooth

Think of these as guidelines for good brewery citizenship, pup-style!

  1. Patios Only, Please: Furry friends are welcome in our designated outdoor patio areas only. Health codes mean they can't join you inside the brewery or restaurant spaces (service animals specifically trained to aid a person with a disability are, of course, the exception).

  2. Leash 'Em Up: All dogs must be kept on a short, non-retractable leash at all times and remain under the direct control of their owner. This prevents unexpected wanderings or overly friendly greetings with neighbouring tables.

  3. Good Vibes Only: Please only bring dogs that are well-behaved, socialized, and comfortable in bustling environments. Excessive barking, jumping, aggression, or bothering other guests (human or canine) means it might be time for your pup to head home.

  4. Paws on the Floor: For hygiene and safety, please keep your pup on the ground, not on chairs, benches, laps, or tables.

  5. Uh-Ohs Happen: Accidents can occur! Please be prepared to clean up immediately after your dog if they have one. Let our staff know if you need any assistance with cleaning supplies. Potty breaks should ideally happen before arriving and away from patio areas.

  6. Thirsty Pups: We're happy to provide fresh water for your dog – just ask our staff! You're also welcome to bring your own portable water bowl, especially on warm days.

  7. Respect the Space: Please ensure your dog doesn't block walkways or high-traffic areas. Finding a spot slightly out of the main thoroughfare is usually best.

Tips for a Pawsitively Perfect Patio Visit

Following the rules is step one, but here are a few extra tips to make the visit great for your dog:

  • Know Your Dog: Honestly assess your dog's temperament. Is loud chatter, unfamiliar smells, and lots of foot traffic okay for them, or does it cause stress? A brewery patio isn't the right fit for every pup, and that's okay!

  • Potty Break Pre-Game: Make sure your dog has had a good walk and a chance to relieve themselves before arriving at the brewery.

  • Bring Distractions (Quiet Ones!): A favourite chew toy (that doesn't squeak!) can help keep your dog occupied and settled.

  • Seek Shade & Comfort: On warm days, find a shady spot for your pup to lie down and ensure they have access to water.

  • Timing is Everything: Maybe avoid the absolute peak rush hour if it's your dog's first visit or if they get easily overwhelmed.

  • Know When to Go: Be prepared to cut your visit short if your dog seems stressed, anxious, or overly restless. Their comfort comes first!

Come Hang Out (Responsibly)!

We genuinely enjoy being a spot where the whole family – including the furry members – can relax and enjoy the beautiful Fraser Valley atmosphere. By working together and keeping these guidelines in mind, we can ensure our patios remain a welcoming space for everyone.

So leash up your well-behaved best friend, grab some water, and head down to Old Yale Chilliwack or Abbotsford for some sunshine sipping and patio relaxation together!

Happy Tails & Cheers! 🐾🍻
