Craft Beer 101: What is a Radler?

If you’re looking for a beer to quench your thirst on a hot day… look no further. A Radler is EXACTLY what you need. Light, easy-drinking, refreshing and OH SO sessionable, there’s no better Summertime beer than a Radler.

There are a few different tales on how the Radler came to be but we’re going to focus on our favourite because well, it makes a good story, and you know we like a good story. First things first, Radler actually means “cyclist” in German; and that’s why we think this story holds some weight…

It all started in the 1920’s with Innkeeper Franz Kugler in the small town of Deisenhofen, just outside of Munich. The roaring 20’s not only brought economic prosperity and cultural edge but apparently, also a boom in the popularity of bicycling. To cater to the surge in cyclists, Kulger created a bicycle trail from Munich, through the woods that led to his inn. On a beautiful June day in 1922, a whopping 13,000 cyclists made their way to Kugler’s inn. Unsurprisingly he found himself quickly running out of beer, so he decided to blend it with lemon soda (when life gives you lemons...), hereby creating the Radler! Not only did it taste great but at around 2.5% alcohol,  it allowed cyclists to enjoy a pint and continue on their way…

A Radler was originally 2 parts beer (usually a lager or another type of lighter beer) mixed with 1 part lemonade or a lemon-lime soda. Of course, curious brewers eventually began experimenting with other juices and sodas, and in our case, fruity teas, to find new delicious blends.

Now, while we love a good classic Radler (crafted with juice), when we decided it was time to add this type of brew to our line-up, we wanted to explore unique flavours and concepts, think outside the box a little and offer the same sessionable style but with a higher than traditional ABV… and that’s exactly what we did.
